We quantify forest degradation, its dynamics and proximate causes for the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 2002 to 2016. Our results highlight targeted interventions and policies that can help to reduce forest degradation but cautions that spillover to neighboring areas need to be considered. https://doi.org/10.3389/fcosc.2021.690562
